Malawi Police have arrested a 49-year-old man, Nelson Chipokosa, as the prime suspect in a K392 million robbery that occurred on February 9 near Autotech Building in Lilongwe.
The victim was allegedly lured into a fake foreign-currency deal, after which a team of attackers robbed him and fled in an unregistered vehicle before sharing the money locally.
Police Deputy Publicist Alfred Chinthere said Chipokosa is also wanted over violent panga attacks, including one targeting activist Sylvester Namiwa of Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI).
The arrest is part of ongoing efforts by police to crack down on crime and bring perpetrators to justice.
Chipokosa’s arrest has raised hopes that the stolen cash will be recovered and returned to the victim.
Police say operations are ongoing to arrest other syndicate members involved in the robbery.
The case highlights the need for citizens to be vigilant and cautious when engaging in financial transactions, especially those involving large sums of money.
