“No time to enjoy,” as he once said, Mutharika Limits Ministers’ Local Travel

President Arthur Peter Mutharika has ordered government Ministers and their deputies to undertake only one local trip per month, effective immediately.

A letter signed by Chief Secretary Justin Saidi, verified by Malawi24, says the directive aims to curb excessive travel that is straining government resources, particularly through allowances and fuel costs.

The Presidency noted the government is operating under an austerity budget and warned that increased travel undermines cost-saving efforts. Any trip beyond the monthly limit now requires presidential approval.

The decision follows months of extensive travel by ministers across the country and has drawn praise from some commentators, who view it as a step toward fiscal discipline.
