Police in Chitipa have arrested Gregory Mugala from the area of Senior Traditional Authority
Kameme in the district for allegedly monetizing a person with albinism.
Chitipa Police Public Relations Officer, Sub Inspector Gladwell Simwaka, has confirmed the
arrest in Malawi24 on Friday, and says paperworks are underway to investigate and bring
Mugala to court to face the charges.
However, Simwaka said that the case is simple because the victim has not yet made an official call
to complain to Chitipa Police on the same.
It is alleged that Mugala, who is a taxi driver, made it a habit of referring to a woman with
albinism, who is the wife of Moses Nyondo, a hospital attendant at Kameme Health Centre, as
being money month seven million kwacha whenever they meet in the street.
Meanwhile, Nyondo says this has affected him psychologically, as he loves the woman and she is
considered his wife, yet someone is referring to her as a commodity for sale.
“I ask the authorities to protect my wife by imposing harsh punishments, considering that
Kameme borders Tanzania and Zambia, and is an area with a history of threats against persons
with albinism,” Nyondo said.
Mugala is currently being kept in custody awaiting his trial.
