Malawi’s international rapper, Tay Grin, is under fire for allegedly failing to support fellow artists despite his success. The controversy reignited following remarks by rival artist IKK on Podcast Malawi, where he labeled Grin as “selfish.”

This accusation has resonated with fans and raised significant questions about Grin’s commitment to the local music scene.

While Grin has been instrumental in bringing international stars like Brick and Lace, Wizkid, and Awilo Longomba to perform in Malawi, critics argue that his contributions to uplifting local talent have been lacking.

Prominent social media influencer Mwiza-The Life Coach known for his “Atelo” slogan remarked, “While IKK may not be the best, his critique of Tay Grin’s lack of support for budding artists rings true.”

Several artists have voiced their frustrations. Back in the days R n B artist Kumbu, who gained recognition under Grin’s Black Rhyno label, has reportedly struggled due to a lack of exposure.

Additionally, artists like JB, currently in the USA, Daredevils and Lhomwe have made subtle references to Grin’s alleged neglect in their music, as has Fredokiss, who has shifted into politics.

However, Grin previously called for Zambians to reciprocate the enthusiasm shown for their music by providing similar opportunities for Malawian artists. “

True growth only happens when the doors swing both ways,” he stated, appealing for equitable support for local musicians.

Unfortunately, this appeal appears to have been overlooked, indicating a lack of sufficient support.

Acknowledging the mounting criticism, Tay Grin has reached out to fans for suggestions on how he can better support local artists, emphasizing his willingness to engage with the community to rebuild trust and foster collaboration.
