Zomba Central Prison’s new scanning machine has proved its worth, intercepting a bag of Cannabis hidden in a 5kg bag of flour during routine screening.

Reports are indicating that a thorough search revealed a concealed bag of cannabis, prompting immediate action by the prison’s security team.

“The scanning machine proved its worth, and our team’s quick action ensured the contraband was seized.” said Superintendent Samuel Chimgwenembe, General Duties Officer at Zomba Central Prison.

Station Officer, Gustone Malisye, praised the security team’s diligence, stating, their efforts, combined with the scanning machine’s effectiveness, have sent a strong message that they wouldn’t tolerate any attempts to compromise prison safety and security.

Two individuals, Davie Bamusi and Richard Kabambe, have been arrested and are currently in police custody, facing charges related to the attempted smuggling. 

Bamusi claimed he acted solely as a transporter and identified Kabambe as the mastermind behind the operation.

Meanwhile, the Malawi Prisons Service has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding safety and security within its facilities, highlighting the professionalism and dedication of its officers in preventing such incidents.
