What began as a competitive by-election is fast turning into a Mtumbuka wave, as cross-party support continues to swell behind Matthews Mtumbuka, raising expectations of a decisive UTM victory in Rumphi Central ahead of the March 17 polls.

Momentum for Mtumbuka has received a major boost as new members who defected from various political parties three months ago were formally incorporated into the UTM Executive Committee for Rumphi District, strengthening the party’s local structures and consolidates Mtumbuka’s growing base of support.

Former MCP member Evelyn Dzimbiri, speaking during the incorporation ceremony, expressed strong confidence in Mtumbuka’s candidacy, describing him as the only viable hope for development in Rumphi Central. She said the increasing wave of support from across party lines reflects the people’s trust in his leadership.

“People are uniting behind Dr. Mtumbuka because they see results, vision, and commitment,” Dzimbiri said. “This growing support signals that a decisive victory for UTM is within reach.”

Mtumbuka, in welcoming the new executive members, thanked them for joining UTM and urged them to work diligently at the grassroots to translate the swelling support into tangible change for the constituency.

Recently, the party has welcomed defectors from the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), and MCP, among others openly rallying behind Mtumbuka.

The constituency fell vacant after Enoch Chihana, who won the Rumphi Central parliamentary seat, was appointed Second Vice-President by President Peter Mutharika.
