Authorities at the National Children’s Commission (NCC) have announced intensified efforts to promote and safeguard the rights of children with albinism, following growing concerns about their safety.

The move comes in the wake of warnings from the Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi (APAM), which has raised alarms over incidents suggesting renewed threats to people with albinism in the country.

Benedicto Kondowe, Vice Chairperson of the NCC, told Malawi24 that the commission is actively engaging the Malawi Police Service to ensure that individuals accused of violating the rights of children with albinism face prosecution.

“We are working closely with the police to ensure that any reported cases of abuse or threats against children with albinism are thoroughly investigated and that the perpetrators are held accountable,” Kondowe said.

In addition to legal measures, Kondowe emphasized that the commission is strengthening collaboration with local councils and community structures to improve vigilance and protection for children with albinism across Malawi.

He noted that community involvement is critical in identifying and preventing potential threats before they escalate.

“This is not only about responding to incidents after they happen but also about creating a protective environment where children with albinism can live, learn, and grow safely,” Kondowe added.

Children with albinism in Malawi have historically faced discrimination, stigma, and targeted attacks due to myths and misconceptions surrounding their condition. Recent reports indicate that despite nationwide awareness campaigns, the risk to this vulnerable group remains significant.

Through these enhanced initiatives, the NCC hopes to provide stronger protection frameworks, ensuring that the rights and safety of children with albinism are upheld in line with Malawi’s legal and human rights obligations.

APAM has welcomed the NCC’s efforts, urging continued vigilance and community engagement to prevent further violations and to promote a society free from discrimination and fear for children with albinism.
