Girls Shine Foundation (GSF) has launched a school mentorship initiative aimed at providing guidance and counseling to secondary school girls, educating them about the benefits of setting career goals.

Speaking during one of the mentorship sessions at Bwaila Secondary School in Lilongwe, Sarah Kazembe, a member of GSF, explained that the idea for the program arose after noticing that many girls lack safe spaces where they can receive motivation and guidance.

“We wanted to create opportunities for young girls to realize their full potential and encourage them to complete their education,” Kazembe said.

She added that the foundation plans to expand the program to more secondary schools within Lilongwe and occasionally travel outside the city to reach additional schools.

Beyond mentorship, Kazembe mentioned that GSF is also offering vocational skills training that aims to support girls who have completed their studies, helping them gain practical skills while planning their next steps.

In her remarks, Jean Kamenya, a guidance and counseling teacher at Bwaila Secondary School, emphasized the importance of such programs.

“These sessions are crucial at a young age as they help guide girls in pursuing their education,” she said.

Kamenya also highlighted that many of the school’s cases concern financial challenges that prevent children from completing their education, underscoring the need for initiatives like GSF’s mentorship and skills programs.
