National Bank of Malawi (NBM) has announced the restoration of international Visa transaction services following intermittent disruptions that had affected customers’ ability to make international payments.
In a notice issued on Wednesday, the bank said the challenges on the Visa network, which had affected international transactions, have now been fully resolved.
The disruption had affected customers who rely on Visa cards for online purchases, subscriptions and other cross-border payments.
The challenges came at a time when Malawian banks are increasingly under pressure to ensure seamless digital and international payment services amid growing demand for online platforms.
However, some customers have confirmed that the service is now functioning normally.
Malawi24 spoke with one of the NBM customers, who said he has successfully paid for a Spotify Premium subscription using an NBM Visa card following the restoration of the service.“I have managed to pay for Spotify Premium through NBM,” the customer said.
The restoration comes amid ongoing challenges in the banking sector related to foreign currency availability, correspondent banking relationships and the reliability of international payment gateways, which have in recent years affected the consistency of cross-border transactions.
NBM thanked its customers for their patience and understanding during the period of disruption.
The bank, which is regulated by the Reserve Bank of Malawi, remains one of the key financial institutions facilitating international and domestic electronic transactions in the country.
