The Malawi Government has announced it will meet all funeral expenses for five members of the Hive Band who died in a tragic road accident while traveling to perform at an end-of-year concert in Lilongwe, describing the loss as a devastating blow to the nation’s cultural heritage.

In a condolence message, President Arthur Peter Mutharika and First Lady Gertrude Mutharika said they were deeply heartbroken by the deaths of the young artists, who were part of the team supporting Afro-dance musician Eli Njuchi.

The accident claimed the lives of Elivacy Matamando Muyaba, Wilfred Kupengule Jnr, Vincent Mkwinda, McFarlen Banda, and Raphael Chitsonga.

The President said the five were more than performers, noting that their talent, dedication, and artistry had played a significant role in shaping Malawi’s music industry over the years.

He described their passing as a national tragedy that has left a painful void in the country’s cultural fabric.

The statement emphasized that the loss extends beyond the immediate families and the Musicians Association of Malawi, affecting the entire nation.

The President added that the circumstances surrounding their deaths were particularly heartbreaking, as the artists were on their way to entertain Malawians and spread joy through music.

As part of what the President described as a gesture of shared national mourning, the Government will fully cover funeral costs to ensure the artists are accorded dignified burials.

The First Family conveyed their thoughts and prayers to the bereaved families during what they described as an exceptionally difficult period.

The deaths of the Hive Band members have sparked widespread grief across the music industry and among fans, with many paying tribute to their contribution to Malawi’s creative arts sector.
