Drivers Association of Malawi calls for urgent road repairs

Drivers Association of Malawi urges urgent road repairs to improve safety and infrastructure.

The Drivers Association of Malawi (DAM) has expressed deep concern over the country’s badly damaged road network, particularly following recent heavy rains that have left many roads in a dangerous state.

According to a statement seen by Malawi24, DAM supports warnings from the Minibus Owners Association of Malawi (MOAM) and the Malawi Health Equity Network (MHEN) about the alarming rise in accidents, injuries, and loss of life and property due to the dire road conditions.

DAM Chairperson Haryston John Banda and Vice Secretary Elias Joseph Banda, has indicated that the condition of potholes has affected not only their members but also the general public, straining the healthcare system and causing significant economic losses due to vehicle damages.

DAM is also calling on the government to hold National Roads Authority engineers accountable for road construction and maintenance, take urgent action to fix the pothole crisis affecting everyone including government officials, and ensure road-user fees and fuel levies are used effectively to improve road infrastructure.

However, the association is urging the National Roads Authority (NRA) under the Ministry of Transport and Public Works to expedite repairs and maintenance to ensure safe passage for all road users.
