Good exam results have brought more than pride to some teachers in Zomba City, with their efforts now earning them cash rewards of up to K100,000.
Zomba City South Member of Parliament James Mpunga has put more than K1.2 million towards rewarding teachers and primary schools that performed well in the 2025/2026 Primary School Leaving Certificate of Education (PSLCE) examinations.
Mpunga, a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislator, announced the support during an awards ceremony organised by Zomba City Council to recognise outstanding teachers and primary schools.
Speaking at the event, Mpunga said he was proud of the city’s performance in the selection of learners for Form One compared with schools across Malawi.
He said financial rewards could motivate teachers to maintain their performance and help more learners secure places in secondary schools in the coming academic year.

“I would like to thank the teachers and primary schools that performed well in the examinations for bringing pride to the education sector in Zomba City. I encourage you to maintain the same spirit and achieve similar results next year,” said Mpunga.
He also commended the council for organising the ceremony and urged it to introduce similar incentives in other sectors, including police, health and agriculture, to encourage workers to improve their performance.
Zomba City Council chief executive officer Archangel Bakolo said the awards were intended to motivate teachers to sustain good academic results every year.
During the ceremony, teachers received cash prizes of K100,000 and K80,000, depending on their performance, while outstanding primary schools received K100,000 each.
Among the award winners was Kettie Sagawa of St Joseph Girls Primary School, who received the highest cash prize among the teachers.
Sagawa attributed her success to thorough preparation and dedication, saying her commitment to teaching helped her learners achieve good grades in the examinations.
Other schools recognised for their performance included Police Primary School, Bwaila Primary School, Chikamveka Primary School, Cobbe Barracks Primary School, Prison Primary School, Sacred Heart Boys Primary School, Mponda Primary School, Fr Frederick Private School and Zomba Baptist Primary School.
