Some learners at Chatata Primary School in Lilongwe have been forced to squeeze into limited classroom space, highlighting a long-running challenge that is now finally beginning to ease.

Africa Global Logistics (AGL) Malawi Limited has donated school desks and stationery materials to help address some of the challenges facing the school.

The donation was made as part of the company’s Solidarity Day activities, during which AGL identified the shortage of desks and materials used for marking examinations as some of the key challenges affecting the school.

Country Commercial Director for AGL Malawi Limited, Kimy Masaninga, said the company believes learners are more likely to concentrate and perform well in class when they study in a conducive learning environment.

He said AGL is guided by four core values, humility, agility, entrepreneurship and solidarity adding that the company celebrates Solidarity Day every year as part of its efforts to support communities in which it operates.

“Last year, we had a similar event which focused on the health sector. This year, we have chosen education because it is a fundamental human right,” said Masaninga.

Chatata Primary School Deputy Head Teacher Bertha Mkwala described the donation as timely, saying it would help ease some of the challenges the school has been experiencing, particularly the shortage of desks and teaching materials.

“Our girls face difficulties standing up when they want to respond to a question. We therefore thank AGL for the donation, as it has come at the right time,” said Mkwala.

She added that the stationery materials would also assist teachers in preparing for examinations and marking examination papers.
