Blantyre Water Board (BWB) has appointed Henri Mathelo Bakuwa as its new Chief Executive Officer.
The appointment follows the Board’s dismissal of former CEO Yeremia Chihana for gross misconduct.
Announcing the appointment, Board Chairman Stanley Chirwa said Bakuwa brings experience in financial management, strategic leadership, corporate governance and public sector management across the private and public sectors.
According to the board, Bakuwa served BWB for six years as Director of Finance and that service gives him a strong understanding of its mandate, operations, opportunities and challenges.
He holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Malawi (The Polytechnic), an ACCA qualification from the United Kingdom and a Diploma in Business Studies.
His career includes senior positions at the Malawi Gaming Board, Lever Brothers Malawi, Malawi Distilleries Limited, Sara Lee/Kiwi Brands Limited, Mwaiwathu Private Hospital and the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Development.
Chihana was dismissed with immediate effect after a disciplinary process, adopting the findings of a Disciplinary Committee that he committed gross misconduct.
According to the Board, Chihana was served with a summons setting out the charges and given the chance to respond, but did not attend the hearing, which went ahead in his absence.
The Board said the misconduct established was grave enough to destroy the trust and confidence required between a Chief Executive Officer and the Board.
