Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has moved to stop confusion over the postponed fresh parliamentary elections after a fake calendar announcing a new polling date started circulating on social media.
The Commission says it has not issued any revised electoral calendar for the Nsanje South and Mangochi East constituencies.
According to the Malawi Electoral Commission, the document circulating online is not an official communication from the Commission, and MEC has not yet issued a revised electoral calendar announcing a new polling date.
MEC has therefore urged members of the public, political parties, candidates and other electoral stakeholders to disregard the document and avoid sharing or circulating it.
The Commission said official information concerning the fresh elections will only be communicated through its authorised communication channels.
The warning comes after MEC postponed the fresh parliamentary elections that had initially been scheduled for September 29, 2026, citing operational challenges affecting its preparedness.
MEC has previously indicated that a revised electoral calendar would be issued once critical operational challenges, including access to its Njewa Warehouse, are resolved and realistic timelines for the remaining electoral activities can be established.
The Commission has stressed that the postponement does not cancel the fresh elections in Nsanje South and Mangochi East.
MEC has appealed to the public to rely on verified information from the Commission to avoid confusion and the spread of misinformation regarding the electoral process.
The Commission has also urged stakeholders to exercise caution before sharing election-related information circulating on social media.
MEC Director of Media and Public Relations, Sangwani Mwafulirwa, issued the clarification.
