Parents across Malawi are set to see a nationwide vaccination drive as government moves to protect children against measles and rubella.
The Ministry of Health and Sanitation has announced plans to roll out a Measles-Rubella Supplementary Vaccination Campaign across the country
Scheduled for 21st to 25th September, 2026, the campaign will target children aged 9 months to 9 years in response to pockets of Measles-Rubella outbreaks in several districts.
According to the Ministry, Malawi has recorded 376 confirmed cases of Measles-Rubella between January and August 2026 and the campaign is aimed at stopping further spread of the disease.
The Ministry says the exercise will be carried out in all health facilities, outreach clinics, and other temporary sites including schools, trading centres, churches, and Early Childhood Development Centres.
In addition to vaccination, children aged 6 months to 5 years will also receive Vitamin A supplementation during the campaign.
The Ministry described measles as a highly contagious viral disease with symptoms that include facial rash, red itchy eyes, and runny nose.
The campaign will also be used to raise awareness on measles prevention measures and encourage prompt medical attention.
The Ministry will also use the period to sensitize communities on the importance of routine vaccinations for all children.
The Ministry has appealed to all parents and caregivers, community and religious leaders, and other stakeholders to ensure that every child in the targeted age group gets vaccinated during the campaign, regardless of the child’s previous vaccination status.
