Excitement has swept through Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) after five students received scholarships, while six top performers were rewarded for their academic excellence.
National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc made the awards through its Mo Excellence programme, which supports students facing financial challenges and recognises outstanding academic performance.
The awards were presented on Friday as part of NBM plc’s wider commitment to supporting students in universities across the country.
The bank is providing 59 scholarships and 41 Vice Chancellor’s List awards to students from KuHeS, Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), University of Malawi (UNIMA), Mzuzu University (MZUNI), Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) and Catholic University.
Speaking during the presentation, NBM plc Chief Executive Officer Harold Jiya said the bank believes education is critical to developing Malawi’s human resources.
“We believe that education is a foundation of economic development, as it helps to break cycles of poverty, uplift families, empower communities and help in nation building,” said Jiya.
Jiya said the support would help students complete their education while empowering some of the country’s brightest young people.
He added that the number of beneficiaries is expected to double each year.
For KUHeS student Atusaimwe Kasola, the scholarship has come at a time when financial challenges are making university life difficult for many students.
“I warmly welcome this support, as financial support is hard here at the university. Hence, we thank National Bank of Malawi plc for this support,” said Kasola.
KUHeS Vice Chancellor MacPherson Mallewa described the intervention as a game changer, saying the university had received two forms of support, recognising excellence and helping students meet the cost of their education.
“These are the kind of support that students require. So, to have National Bank of Malawi plc support us gives us gratitude, excitement and hope that this is the kind of help needed from the corporate world,” said Mallewa.
