Deputy Speaker of Parliament Victor Musowa has hit back at critics over his “kundale timadya” remarks, insisting his words have been deliberately twisted to make him sound like he was promoting theft or corruption.
Musowa, the Mulanje Bale legislator, made the remarks during a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) gathering in Thyolo on Saturday, September 12, 2026.
Speaking to local media, Musowa said he was talking about how political leaders should look after the people who support them, particularly councillors and legislators representing communities.
“Kusunga anthu nkudyetsa. Kundale timadya ndipo ukapatsidwa usamayang’anenso zomwe mzakoyo akudya chifukwa zimenezi zimadzetsa mkwiyo maka kwa anthu omwe amafuna kuti zabwino zonse zikhale zawo,” Musowa said.
He said the statement was about maintaining relationships between leaders and their communities, arguing that politicians should not abandon supporters after receiving their political backing.
Musowa also criticised leaders who, according to him, use ordinary people for political purposes without giving them adequate support or maintaining meaningful relationships.
The legislator said his wider message was about responsible political leadership and social responsibility, not stealing, corruption or any other criminal conduct.
He has challenged those circulating what he considers a distorted interpretation of his remarks to stop twisting his words.
Musowa said anyone who remains unclear about what he meant by “kundale timadya” is free to contact him directly for an explanation of the context.
He maintained that the phrase should not be interpreted as an endorsement of wrongdoing.
