Two Malawians will travel to Morocco to support the Scorchers at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), turning everyday card transactions into a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness the national team’s historic debut on the continental stage.

The all-expenses-paid trip was awarded through National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc’s Waku WAFCON POS Transact and Win Promotion, with Charles Msatiyenda and Donard Nyirenda emerging as the grand prize winners during the campaign’s final draw held on Tuesday.

The promotion was designed to encourage customers to embrace digital payments while rallying support for the Malawi National Women’s Football Team ahead of the tournament in Morocco.

Before announcing the grand prize winners, the bank also rewarded customers through monthly draws held in May and June.

In each monthly draw, one customer won K500,000, 10 customers received K200,000 each, while another 10 customers walked away with K100,000 each. The two monthly draws produced a total of 42 cash prize winners.

Speaking after the draw, NBM plc Head of Digital Finance Services William Kaunda said the promotion reflected the bank’s commitment to rewarding customers while supporting Malawi’s transition to a safer and more inclusive digital economy.

“The Scorchers’ qualification for their maiden WAFCON finals is a defining moment for Malawi. As the proud financial partner of the Scorchers, National Bank wanted every Malawian to feel connected to this historic journey. That is why we introduced the Waku WAFCON POS Transact & Win Promotion, allowing our customers to celebrate the team, embrace digital payments and be rewarded for participating,” Kaunda said.

He said the grand prize remains subject to each winner possessing a valid passport and successfully completing identity verification after being contacted by the bank.

“The grand prize is subject to each winner having a valid passport and successfully confirming their identity when contacted by the Bank via phone. Should either winner fail to meet these requirements or be unreachable for identity verification, another draw will be conducted to select a replacement winner,” he said.

The promotion ran for two months, with customers automatically qualifying for the draws by spending at least K50,000 using National Bank Point of Sale (POS) devices.

Kaunda said every qualifying transaction represented more than just a payment, describing it as a contribution towards building a secure digital economy while showing solidarity with the Scorchers.

“In this campaign, every qualifying POS transaction carried a dual meaning. It was a practical step towards safer, more secure and more convenient payments, and at the same time, it was a symbolic show of support for the Scorchers as they carry Malawi’s hopes and pride onto the continental stage,” he said.

Apart from the POS promotion, the bank also organised customer engagement activities such as the Guess the Jersey campaign and the Mo activation in different parts of the country to bring supporters closer to the Scorchers’ historic WAFCON journey.
