The Scorchers have declared themselves ready to compete with Africa’s best as Malawi prepares for its historic debut at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco later this month.
Head Coach Lovemore Fazili expressed confidence in his squad on Tuesday as the team departed from Kamuzu International Airport, saying the players are mentally and physically prepared to carry the nation’s hopes on the continental stage after months of intensive preparations.
Fazili said the team is determined to make Malawi proud despite facing tough opposition in its maiden appearance at the tournament.
“The players have worked extremely hard and are mentally and physically ready for the challenge ahead. We are going to Morocco with confidence, determination and the ambition to represent Malawi with pride. Our goal is to compete, give our best in every match and make the nation proud,” he said.
The team received a warm send-off from government officials, football stakeholders, supporters and sponsor National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc, which reaffirmed its commitment to supporting women’s football.
NBM plc Marketing and Corporate Affairs Manager Akossa Mphepo-Hiwa said the bank is honoured to be part of the Scorchers’ historic journey after backing the team during its rise to the continent’s biggest women’s football tournament.
“We saw the team’s potential and wanted to help nurture it. That is why we are proud to be part of this historic journey. Watching the girls represent Malawi on the continental stage is a dream we are honoured to share,” she said.
Malawi secured its first-ever WAFCON qualification after defeating Angola in the qualifiers and will begin its Group C campaign against Nigeria on 28 July. The squad includes star sisters Tabitha Chawinga and Temwa Chawinga, who are expected to lead the team’s attack in Morocco.
