A 28-year-old woman has been arrested in Salima after police allegedly found a large quantity of medical drugs in her house without a licence.
Police said Happiness Banda was arrested on Thursday at Ngwena Village following an intelligence-led operation targeting criminal activities in the district.
Speaking to Malawi24, Salima Police spokesperson Sub Inspector Rabecca Ndiwate said officers searched the suspect’s house after acting on intelligence.
She said the operation led to the recovery of assorted medical drugs allegedly kept without a permit.
The recovered drugs included 3,000 capsules of Amoxicillin, 6,000 capsules of Indomethacin, 2,000 tablets of Ibuprofen, 1,400 tablets of Paracetamol, 1,000 tablets each of Albendazole and Chlorpromazine, 14 bottles of Amoxicillin syrup and seven Salbutamol inhalers, among other medicines.
Police also recovered injections, syringes and other assorted pharmaceutical products from the house, according to Ndiwate.
“As a station, we have embarked on intelligence-led operations aimed at curbing criminal activities and bringing sanity to the district,” Ndiwate said.
She said Banda failed to produce documents authorising her to possess the drugs when police requested them.
Police identified the suspect as Happiness Banda, 28, of Ngwena Village in the area of Traditional Authority Ndindi in Salima District.
Ndiwate said Banda will appear in court after police complete their investigations.
