X-ray nightmare ends for Machinga patients

Machinga New X Ray Machine- Malawi24
Patients in Machinga can finally breathe a sigh of relief after months of struggling to access X-ray services.

The Machinga district hospital has received a new machine that ends a six-month disruption.

The prolonged breakdown had forced many patients, especially those needing urgent scans, to travel outside the district for diagnostic services, delaying treatment and increasing costs.

Hospital spokesperson Wongani Nyirenda said the newly installed X-ray machine has restored the hospital’s imaging services and will strengthen its ability to diagnose and manage a wide range of medical conditions.

Nyirenda said the machine will improve the quality and speed of diagnosis, allowing patients to receive timely medical care without leaving the district.

“The new X-ray machine will strengthen our diagnostic services by ensuring that patients receive timely and accurate examinations within the district,” Nyirenda said.

He added that the equipment has been designed with features that enable it to continue operating during power outages, a challenge that has often affected healthcare service delivery in many public facilities.

According to Nyirenda, the machine’s ability to function during electricity interruptions would help reduce delays and ensure that patients receive essential diagnostic services without unnecessary disruptions.

X-ray services play a crucial role in healthcare because they help medical professionals detect and monitor a wide range of conditions, including bone fractures, chest infections such as pneumonia and tuberculosis, lung abnormalities, and other internal injuries that may not be visible through physical examinations alone.

Health experts have welcomed the development, describing it as an important step towards improving access to quality healthcare services for people in Machinga District.

They said having a functional X-ray machine at the district hospital would not only reduce transport costs for patients but also enable healthcare providers to make faster and more accurate decisions regarding treatment.

Previously, patients requiring X-ray examinations had to travel to other health facilities, a situation that increased financial burdens and sometimes delayed diagnosis and treatment.
