Chilima’s personal assistant survives arrest

The personal assistant to Vice President Saulos Chilima left a police interrogation room on Monday without being arrested after investigators reportedly uncovered a key inconsistency in a complaint related to the Chikangawa plane crash that claimed the life of the Vice President.

Winnie Nyondo, a former aide to the late Vice President Saulos Chilima, was summoned to Area 30 Police Headquarters in Lilongwe, according to her lawyer, Nkhwima Mchizi.

Speaking to the local media, Mchizi said the complaint originated from Parliament, prompting police to obtain a search warrant over a social media post allegedly linked to Nyondo.

He said the complaint alleged that Nyondo published the post on June 10, 2024. However, after a search conducted in the presence of Nyondo and her lawyer, police allegedly established that the post was actually made on June 13, 2024.

According to Mchizi, the date differs from the one cited during last week’s Parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee inquiry into the Chikangawa plane crash.

He said Nyondo has since been cleared and no arrest has been made.

National Police spokesperson Lael Chimtembo said he would comment later on the matter.

The Parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee is investigating circumstances surrounding the Chikangawa plane crash that killed late Chilima and eight others on June 10, 2024.
