The decision to send Second Vice President Enoch Kanzingeni Chihana to a key regional summit has sparked fresh reactions.
President Peter Mutharika has delegated Chihana to preside over the Extraordinary SADC Organ Troika Summit of Heads of State and Government, a virtual meeting scheduled for today, 22 June 2026, and set to be hosted by Malawi.
Reacting to the development, Concerned Citizens of Malawi–People Power Movement (CCM-PPM), welcomed the move, describing it as a sign of unity within the country’s leadership.
The grouping said the decision by Mutharika, who chairs the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, demonstrates trust and coordination at the highest level of government while challenging claims of divisions among senior leaders.
In a statement signed by Executive Director Edward Kambanje, Senior Member Oliver Nakoma and Secretary General Prince Mattaka, CCM-PPM said the appointment reflects confidence in Chihana’s ability to represent Malawi on a key regional platform.
“The decision demonstrates trust, confidence and a strong working relationship between the President and his Second Vice President,” the statement said.
The organization said the move dispels speculation of rifts within the country’s leadership and instead highlights collaboration in advancing Malawi’s interests at both national and regional levels.
CCM-PPM also commended Mutharika for delegating the assignment to Chihana, saying the decision strengthens national unity and reinforces Malawi’s engagement in regional affairs.
The movement further extended its best wishes to Chihana as he undertakes the assignment on behalf of Malawi.
