Scores of Malawians are fleeing their homes in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province after a fellow Malawian was allegedly beaten to death by a mob.

The South Africa Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has reported that on Friday, 19 June, 2026, a 29-year-old Malawian national, was killed at the Jika Joe Informal Settlement in Pietermaritzburg.

Preliminary reports indicate the attack occurred after an anti-illegal immigration march allegedly organised by a group known as “March and March.” It is alleged that some participants broke away from the demonstration and entered the settlement armed with sticks and other objects, targeting foreign nationals.

The Malawian, who lived in the settlement with his family, reportedly sustained fatal injuries during the violence.

Two other people were injured and received treatment.

According to SABC, the killing has triggered panic among Malawians living in the area, with officials reporting a sharp rise in the number of displaced nationals seeking safety.

It is reported that authorities have since increased police presence in Pietermaritzburg as tensions remain high.

Meanwhile, Malawian officials are urging the South African government and the Department of Home Affairs to establish a temporary processing centre in Pietermaritzburg to speed up the voluntary repatriation of Malawians wishing to return home.

At present, the only two temporary facilities serving affected migrants in KwaZulu-Natal are located in Durban.
