All roads lead to Nsipe, Ntcheu, on Saturday as family members, friends and national leaders gather to unveil a mausoleum and commemorate the second anniversary of late Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima’s death.
The ceremony, will begin with a memorial mass at Nsipe Catholic Grounds from 9am before the unveiling of the mausoleum at his resting place.
Chairperson of the organising committee, Efrem Chilima, said all preparations have been finalized with support from various individuals and the government.
“We are set to remember our dear brother, father and friend Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima during his second death anniversary with a memorial mass which will be celebrated by Bishop Alfred Mateyu Chaima of Zomba Diocese at Nsipe Catholic Grounds from 9am before the unveiling of the mausoleum,” he said.
Chilima said the family expects a huge turnout because of the many lives the former vice president touched during his lifetime.
“We want to honour the late Dr Saulos Chilima in a dignified and respectable manner and that is why we are asking all those who have been invited to the event at Nsipe that the dress code is black, white and purple,” he said.
After the mass, family members, clergy, traditional leaders and close friends are expected to deliver speeches, while Minister of Education Bright Msaka will attend as Guest of Honour representing President Peter Mutharika.
According to Chilima, other dignitaries expected at the event include First Vice President Jane Mayemu Ansah, Second Vice President Enock Chihana, former President Joyce Banda, former Vice Presidents Cassim Chilumpha, Khumbo Kachali and Michael Usi, Chief Justice Rezine Mzikamanda, Speaker of Parliament Sameer Suleman, cabinet ministers, members of Parliament and members of the diplomatic corps.
Families of the eight people who died alongside Chilima in the plane crash have also been invited to attend the memorial.
Chilima acknowledged that the UTM Party has organised a separate commemoration at Ntcheu Stadium later in the day but urged people to honour the late vice president’s memory with dignity.
“We know that Saulos touched so many lives and we want to honour his life and legacy and celebrate his good works. We all remember him in different ways but let us honour his memory and legacy with dignity and respect,” he said.
Saulos Klaus Chilima died together with eight others in a plane crash at Thungwa in Chikangawa on June 10, 2024, while travelling to Nkhata Bay for the funeral of lawyer Ralph Kasambara.
