Minister bigger than two Vice Presidents

A quiet storm is brewing around the upcoming Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima mausoleum unveiling, after it emerged that a Cabinet minister has been designated Guest of Honour at a ceremony where both First and Second Vice Presidents are expected to be in attendance.

Malawi24 has established that President Peter Mutharika has again delegated Education Minister Bright Msaka as Guest of Honour at the ceremony, a decision that raises eyebrows given that First Vice President Jane Mayemu Ansah and Second Vice President Enock Chihana are both expected to attend.

However, Dr Efrem Chilima, who chairs the family-led organising committee for the mausoleum unveiling, told local media that Bright Msaka will represent President Mutharika as Guest of Honour at the event.

Dr Chilima further revealed that a wide array of senior leaders have confirmed attendance, including First Vice President Jane Ansah and Second Vice President Enock Chihana, former President Joyce Banda, former Vice Presidents Cassim Chilumpha, Khumbo Kachali and Michael Usi, and other senior government officials.

The development has now triggered debate over protocol hierarchy, with questions being raised on how a Cabinet minister would take the Guest of Honour role at a high-profile national ceremony attended by both serving Vice Presidents, alongside former Presidents.

The Office of the President and Cabinet had earlier pushed back against narratives of disagreement, insisting that the President retains constitutional authority to delegate officials to state functions, stressing efficiency, austerity, and prudent use of public resources.

The statement also dismissed speculation of political friction, saying the Presidency remains united and focused on national priorities.

“Such decisions are not motivated by malice, indifference, or ill-will, but are deliberate measures aimed at promoting efficient governance, reducing unnecessary public expenditure, and demonstrating leadership by example in the implementation of Government’s austerity agenda,” stated Chief Secretary Justin Saidi. “Malawians should be assured that the Presidency remains united, and firmly committed to serving the nation.”

The Saulos Klaus Chilima mausoleum unveiling ceremony is expected to take place on Saturday, June 13,2026 at Nsipe in Ntcheu, marking the second anniversary since his death on 10 June, 2024.
