Authorities turned predators: Kasungu prison warder arrested for defiling 6-year-old amid rising cases
Kasungu is facing an increase in defilement cases by the very same authorities who were supposed to protect the vulnerable, as a prison warder has been arrested for allegedly defiling a 6-year-old girl.
Benson Mbalame, a warder at Kasungu Prison Farm, is currently in police custody at Kasungu Police Station. He faces allegations of defiling the minor on 4 June 2026 at Linyangwa in the district.
Central East Police Region Spokesperson, Esther Mkwanda, told the local media that on the said date, the victim was following a friend when she met Mbalame, who took advantage of her tender age and committed the offence.
Mkwanda added that the suspect, who is expected to appear in court soon, gave the victim K2,000 to keep the incident a secret.
The girl’s parents discovered something was wrong when they noticed their daughter was having difficulties walking. She then revealed that she had been defiled by Mbalame, a claim that was later confirmed by medical tests at a hospital.
This latest incident adds to a disturbing pattern in the district. Recently, police in Kasungu arrested two teachers for allegedly defiling underage girls.
Gerald Banda, 32, a teacher, was arrested late last month for allegedly defiling his 16-year-old student. The offences reportedly took place between April 2025 and January 2026.
Another teacher from Chankhanga Secondary School was arrested for allegedly defiling a 17-year-old student.
Meanwhile, police and community leaders have voiced serious concern over the rising cases of sexual abuse involving minors, especially when perpetrated by individuals in positions of trust and authority.

This is a shame. They need to be punished severely if found guilty
