Malawians hoping for relief from persistent power cuts will have to wait longer, Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) has said.
The power producer says a key project expected to improve electricity supply has encountered delays, raising the prospect of continued blackouts across the country.
The company revealed that a 20-megawatt generating unit at Nkula B remains out of service following delays in the delivery of critical spare parts.
The unit was initially expected to return to operation in April and help boost power generation, but technical setbacks have prolonged repair works and delayed its return to the national grid.
EGENCO spokesperson Moses Gwaza told one of the local prints that the delays were linked to the delivery of critical components required to restore the unit.
“The original equipment manufacturers have assured us that the spare parts will be delivered in the second week of June 2026,” Gwaza was quoted as saying.
Once restored, the unit is expected to increase electricity generation and provide some relief to a national grid that continues to struggle with frequent outages and load shedding.
