US President Donald Trump says only “ignorance or stupidity” could stand in the way of a final peace agreement between Israel and Iran, insisting the two countries are edging closer to a ceasefire.
Trump made the remarks on Monday as diplomatic efforts intensified to prevent the latest hostilities between the two countries from escalating into a wider regional conflict.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, the US leader claimed both Israel and Iran are seeking an immediate ceasefire and that negotiations on a broader peace deal are already underway.
“Both sides, Israel and Iran, are looking to do an immediate ceasefire,” Trump wrote. “Final negotiations on ‘Peace’ are proceeding, subject to ignorance or stupidity getting in its way.”
Trump also indicated that existing restrictions would remain in place until a final agreement is reached, while expressing confidence that developments could move quickly.
His comments come after a fresh exchange of strikes between Israel and Iran raised fears of renewed conflict despite ongoing efforts by Washington and regional allies to secure a lasting settlement.
Meanwhile, Iran signalled a possible de-escalation by announcing the end of its latest military operations against Israel. But the country’s joint military command warned that any further Israeli attacks, particularly in Lebanon, would be met with what it described as “much more severe and crushing measures than before.”
