Seventy-eight inmates across Malawi have begun sitting for this year’s Primary School Leaving Certificate of Education (PSLCE) examinations, marking a 34.5 percent increase from last year’s 58 candidates.
The candidates are drawn from Zomba Prison, Chichiri Prison in Blantyre, Bvumbwe Young Offenders Rehabilitation Centre, Maula Prison in Lilongwe, Kachere Female Prison, Mzuzu Prison and Mzimba Prison.
Malawi Prison Service spokesperson Steve Meke, said the rise signals a growing shift inside the country’s correctional facilities, where education is increasingly being used as a tool for rehabilitation and rebuilding broken futures.
Meke reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to supporting inmates who choose to pursue education while serving their sentences.
“We continue to give these inmates moral and material support as they pursue quality education while in prison,” said Meke.
According to Meke, 68 of the candidates are male while 10 are female, a development he says shows steady progress in widening access to education for both men and women in the prison system.
Beyond the PSLCE candidates, 83 male inmates are also registered for the Junior Certificate of Education (JCE), while 101 inmates are set to sit for the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations this year.
