A total of 101 inmates are writing Junior Certificate of Education (JCE) examinations in Malawi’s prisons, a development the Malawi Prisons Service says shows progress in rehabilitating offenders for life after prison.
The examination centres are Zomba, Blantyre-Chichiri, Bvumbwe Young Offenders Reformatory Centre, Lilongwe-Maula, Mzuzu, and Mzimba.MPS Public Relations Officer, Steve Meke confirmed the development saying the examinations show the service’s commitment to reform and reintegration.
“I can confirm that 101 candidates are writing their exams in our prisons and this is good news for us because it shows that we are able to give our inmates a second chance to redefine their lives so that when they get out of prison they are reformed and ready to reintegrate successfully into their respective communities,” Meke said.
Meke said MPS will continue supporting inmate education through the provision of learning materials to ensure candidates receive all necessary assistance.
He also commended government, individuals and organisations supporting education programmes in correctional facilities.
“We would also like to applaud all individuals, organisations that have been supportive as far as education in prison is concerned. Over and above this is the Malawi government, but we also acknowledge other individuals and organisations that are always supportive in this course,” Meke concluded.
