Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ben Phiri, says 64 people have been arrested in Chikwawa and Nsanje districts for allegedly spreading false rumours about the disappearance of human private parts, claims that resulted in the killing of seven innocent people.

Phiri announced that his ministry plans to remove Traditional Leader Moses for allegedly promoting the rumours, which have caused fear and panic among communities.

He emphasized that the government will not tolerate baseless allegations that endanger lives and disrupt public peace.

Deputy Inspector General of Police, Noel Kaira, also warned that authorities will take strong action against individuals and villages involved in spreading the disturbing claims.

Kaira said police will intensify efforts to stop the spread of the rumours and that no leniency will be shown to those found responsible.

In a letter dated May 12, Secretary for Local Government Moses Chimpepo stressed that traditional leaders have a duty to protect lives and uphold the law.

He warned that chiefs who contribute to unrest or undermine peace and integrity will face legal action.

Meanwhile, various stakeholders have expressed concern over the incidents, questioning the values being instilled in society and urging authorities to ensure all those responsible are brought to justice.

President Arthur Peter Mutharika and the police have since condemned the mob violence, which has left many people living in fear.
