Bishop Alfred Mateyu Chaima of the Catholic Diocese of Zomba has urged Catholic students at the University of Malawi (UNIMA) to avoid suicide, regardless of the challenges they may encounter.

He delivered this message during a Mass held at UNIMA, where 26 students received the sacraments of Confirmation and Baptism. Of these, 13 received Confirmation while the other 13 were baptized.

In his address, Bishop Chaima encouraged students to build supportive friendships and share their problems with trusted individuals whenever they face difficulties, emphasizing that challenges are a normal part of life.

He also called on the newly confirmed and baptized students to deepen their Christian faith, noting that they are embarking on a new spiritual journey within the Church.

Additionally, the Bishop advised all Catholic students at the University of Malawi to remain dedicated to their studies so they can grow into responsible citizens in the future.

“As your Bishop, I will be praying for you every day of your lives so that God may bless you,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of those who received Confirmation, student Yamikani Ndevuzamwayi expressed his joy at receiving the sacrament.

He encouraged fellow students to live out their faith through good deeds, service to others, and active participation in the Church.
