The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ben Phiri, has called on senior officials in Zomba to ensure the city is properly managed and kept clean at all times to promote hygiene and sanitation.

Phiri made the remarks at Gymkhana Club during the launch of Presidential Executive Order No. 2, an initiative aimed at improving cleanliness in the city.

He directed city authorities to ensure that all shops and trading areas are equipped with waste bins as part of efforts to maintain a clean environment.

The minister also expressed concern over the absence of Indian and Chinese business operators at the event, noting that they are key players in the city’s business sector.

“We must educate residents of Zomba on the importance of cleanliness so that no one disposes of waste irresponsibly,” he said.

Speaking at the same event, Zomba City Mayor, Christopher Jana, said the city council plans to visit all wards to raise awareness about cleanliness.

He also shared his disappointment over the absence of Indian business operators, stating that he intends to engage them individually to understand their lack of participation.
