The Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) has issued a warning to students against engaging in sexual activity in halls of residence, stressing that offenders will face disciplinary action.
The memorandum, dated 23 February 2026, was issued by Kondwani Kelvin Mkandawire, PhD, Dean of Students’ Affairs, following complaints from students and guardians regarding sexual activity in campus rooms.
It reminds students that Section 14 of the Student Rules and Regulations strictly prohibits sexual activity in halls of residence and that any individual found violating this rule will face appropriate disciplinary measures.
The notice emphasizes that rooms in the halls are shared spaces and that behavior infringing on the rights and dignity of fellow occupants is unacceptable.
Students have been encouraged to report any incidents to the Dean’s office or to the wardens so that appropriate action can be taken. The Dean also called on the MSRC Social Welfare Directorate and floor representatives to support efforts to maintain discipline in student accommodation.
The memorandum further states that the university exists primarily as a place for learning and personal development and must not be reduced to an environment that promotes immoral conduct or other social vices.
Copies of the memorandum were circulated to the University Registrar, Assistant Registrar (Academics), Acting Assistant Registrar (Administration and Academics), Students’ Liaison Officer, University Chaplain, Male and Female Wardens, MSRC President, and the MSRC Social Welfare Director.
The university has not provided details of any ongoing investigations but stressed that adherence to regulations is essential for maintaining a conducive academic environment.
