Commissioner for Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Limbikani Kamlongera says he is pleased with the voter verification process in Zomba, ahead of the 17 March 2026 local council By-elections.
Kamlongera remarked on Wednesday during a tour of verification centers in Chanda ward in Zomba Chikomwe Constituency and Chirunga ward in Zomba City North Constituency on the last day of the two-day voter inspection.She highlighted that voter verification has gone well, despite the low turnout, which doesn’t affect the voting process.
She urged eligible voters, especially the youth who have reached voting age registered, to take advantage of this opportunity to exercise their voting right.Kamlongera attributed the low turnout to various factors, but emphasized that verification is crucial for achieving inclusivity.
“This exercise is an extension of the 2024 voter registration process, and eligible voters are already aware that their names are in the system. However, this was targeting the youths who will turn 18 years come 17th March,” she highlighted.
The Commissioner encouraged citizens in Chirunga and Chanda wards to exercise their right to vote on election day, stressing that verification is voluntary but essential for a credible electoral process.
During her tour, Kamlongera visited four centres namely Sparkle Foundation and Trans Haven Chirunga Christian Private School in Zomba City North Constituency, while in Zomba Chikomwe she visited Nanjiri and Mchenga primary school in the area of traditional Authority M’biza in the district.
Local government elections in Chirunga Ward were cancelled following the death of aspirant Abraham Nyondo days before elections while in Chanda ward Will have elections following the court ruling for a fresh election.
