Malawians should brace themselves for the arrest and prosecution of corrupt cabinet ministers, government officials, members of parliament, and party leaders, as President Peter Mutharika has warned that no one will be exempt from the long arm of the law.
The warning came on Friday at the official opening of the 2026/27 budget meeting in Parliament in Lilongwe, where Mutharika also delivered his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) since returning to power following the Democratic Progressive Party victory in the September 16, 2025, general election.
In his address, Mutharika directed everyone serving in his government to strictly follow the law and principles of good governance, stressing that his administration would remain fully committed to strengthening good governance, upholding the rule of law, safeguarding justice, and ensuring fiscal responsibility to protect life and public resources.
“Let me make it clear that my Government will arrest anyone involved in corrupt malpractices. Mr. Speaker, Sir, when I say anyone, I mean anyone! It doesn’t matter whether you are a Cabinet Minister, Party official, Member of Parliament, or Government Official. I will shield no one. And there will be no Sacred cows,” warned Mutharika.
The President further appealed to the Executive, Judiciary, and Legislature to act patriotically and avoid making decisions that undermine national interests, saying leaders owe this duty to millions of Malawians and to generations yet to come.
On service delivery and economic transformation, Mutharika directed all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to embrace digital technology, saying Malawi’s economy must now be driven by digital systems.
He urged Malawians to fully utilize online platforms for passport applications, national identity cards, driving licenses, public procurement, and other essential services, describing digitalization as key to efficiency, transparency, and inclusive development.
