The Malawi Environment Protection Authority (MEPA), has ordered PressCane Limited to immediately stop operations following findings that its effluent discharge has been affecting the environment and nearby households.

MEPA issued the Closure Order on 26 January 2026 after an inspection conducted on 21 January 2026 found the company non compliant with environmental management standards under Section 61 of the Environment Management Act of 2017.

The inspection established that effluent spillages from the facility were contaminating surrounding areas and posing risks to both communities and natural resources.

According to the order, Presscane Limited must halt all operations until it satisfies all conditions set by the Authority.

MEPA says the action has been taken under Section 116(1) of the Environment Management Act No. 19 of 2017, which gives the Director General powers to close any premises where environmental standards have been contravened. The law also allows the Authority to impose an administrative fine of up to K5 million.

As part of the enforcement measures, Presscane has been directed to compensate all households affected by the effluent discharge. The company is also required to submit a comprehensive Effluent Management Plan for MEPA approval before any reopening can be considered.

The order further demands that the company carry out a structural assessment and rehabilitation of its effluent containment dams, implement effective effluent flow control measures, and replace all degraded pond liners.

In addition, Presscane must remove accumulated sludge and stagnant effluent from its ponds, introduce routine maintenance systems, and establish protective buffer zones with vegetation around the facility.

Communities around the plant have for some time raised concerns about pollution and possible health and livelihood impacts linked to effluent leakages, especially after heavy rains.

MEPA says the closure demonstrates its commitment to safeguarding the environment and protecting citizens from industrial pollution.

The Authority has since urged companies, industries, and institutions across the country to respect every person’s right to a clean and healthy environment by complying with environmental laws and standards.
