The Malawi Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability following the receipt of humanitarian assistance from Zimbabwe, as the country continues to respond to the effects of heavy rains and related natural disasters.
Zimbabwe on Tuesday officially handed over food, and non-food relief items to Malawi in a show of regional solidarity after Malawi declared a State of Disaster.
The donation was presented during a ceremony held at the Office of the President and Cabinet at Capital Hill in Lilongwe.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, George Chaponda, received the consignment on behalf of the Malawi Government, while Zimbabwe was represented by its Ambassador to Malawi and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, Nancy Saungweme.
Speaking at the handover, Saungweme highlighted the deep-rooted bilateral ties between the two countries, describing the gesture as a reflection of Pan-Africanism and the spirit of cooperation within the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
She said the consignment, which includes food items, cooking oil, blankets and other essential supplies, was aimed at easing the suffering of communities affected by floods and other weather-related disasters.
Saungweme added that the donation marks the first of several consignments Zimbabwe plans to deliver.
In his remarks, Chaponda expressed appreciation to the Government and people of Zimbabwe for what he described as timely and meaningful assistance.
He assured the public that the Malawi Government will ensure transparency in the distribution of the aid, while also reaffirming its commitment to strengthening the longstanding partnership between the two sister republics.
