Inspector General of Police Richard Luhanga has made a daring allegation that the reported violence and torture of individuals with albinism are being orchestrated deliberately in order to mislead the public.

Luhanga made the remarks during a meeting with the Association of People Living with Albinism (APAM), as police moved to address growing public concern fuelled by circulating reports of attacks.

He said police are still investigating reported cases involving alleged grave tampering and a missing person, but warned that misinformation has distorted the true situation on the ground.

According to the police chief, renewed public attention to the issue should not be interpreted as an increase in incidents. He explained that the response followed concerns formally raised to government by APAM, rather than a surge in new cases.

Luhanga reaffirmed the police’s commitment to protecting vulnerable citizens, cautioning that false narratives risk creating unnecessary panic and eroding public trust in law enforcement.

APAM president Young Muhamba confirmed that incidents have been reported since October, adding that police briefed the association on the progress of investigations and agreed on response measures.

Muhamba said APAM will closely monitor the implementation of the agreed actions, noting that public confidence will ultimately depend on accountability and tangible results.
