The Film Association of Malawi (FAMA) has dismissed reports suggesting it misused K100 million, following claims linked to a social media post by its president, Dorothy Kingstone, indicating that the amount had been received.
FAMA says financial records related to the Malawi Film Awards and Gala show that the association did not receive K100 million as reported.
Instead, the documents indicate that Goshen City provided K28 million and an additional 5,000 US dollars, funds which were allocated toward facilitating the participation of foreign filmmakers at the event.
Addressing the matter, FAMA General Secretary Ignitious Kamphinde clarified that the 100 million kwacha in question was a pledge rather than an actual contribution.
He said Goshen City had expressed an intention to support the association with that amount but had not yet disbursed the funds.
“We have not received any K100 million from anyone. Goshen City only pledged that amount, but they have not made the contribution,” Kamphinde said.
Earlier on Thursday, media reports indicated that FAMA had released a comprehensive list of all financial and in-kind support received for the Malawi Film Awards and Gala.
The disclosure showed that total support fell well below K100 million, contradicting the earlier statement attributed to the association’s president.
The release of the support list came shortly after Goshen City announced that its partnership with FAMA had ended.
According to the published breakdown, Goshen City’s confirmed contribution stood at K28 million alongside 5,000 US dollars, which was specifically used to cover costs related to hosting international filmmakers.
The list also names several other partners who supported the event in various capacities, including MultiChoice, which contributed 4,000 US dollars, and Malawi Airlines, which provided four airline tickets.
Additional support was received from institutions such as Zodiak and BICC, among others.
