The High Court in Blantyre has stopped the Government from transferring Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Chief Executive Officer Kamwamba Kumwenda to the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), allowing him to remain in charge of the country’s power utility for now.
The court has issued an injunction restraining the Government from implementing the transfer after granting Kumwenda leave to seek a judicial review of the decision.
On November 5, 2025, the Office of the President and Cabinet wrote to Kumwenda informing him that he had been seconded as a lecturer at MUBAS.
The decision effectively meant that he would leave his position as ESCOM CEO.
Kumwenda challenged the move, arguing that it was unlawful, and asked the court to review the legality of the Government’s action.
In its ruling, the High Court agreed that the matter deserves to be examined and temporarily blocked the transfer until the judicial review is heard and determined.
As a result of the injunction, Kumwenda remains the Chief Executive Officer of ESCOM, ensuring continuity in the leadership of the power utility as the case proceeds.
