Chiefs and residents of Traditional Authority (TA) Kilupula in Karonga District have raised alarm over unfulfilled commitments by the Coal and Mining Group, whose operations are managed by Mwalafyale.
These concerns emerged following a recent inspection of the mine conducted by the Area Development Committee (ADC).
The inspection revealed that while mining activities have expanded, the company has yet to deliver on development projects previously promised to local communities.
Among the unmet commitments are the construction of classrooms at Kafulu and Kasantha schools and the provision of support to local farmers.
In an interview with Malawi24, Kilupula ADC Chairperson Kingdom Malanga expressed frustration, stating that despite the mine being fully operational, surrounding communities have yet to see tangible benefits.
He also noted that, in some areas, mining activities have disrupted farming, livelihoods, and the daily lives of residents.
SGVH Katumbi, representing the mine management, acknowledged the concerns and highlighted the environmental impacts of coal dust and other mining-related disruptions.
He warned that failure by the mine owners to fulfill their commitments could provoke strong opposition from the local community.
Bryan Mwangonde, a senior official of the Coal and Mining Group, admitted that the ADC’s findings and the community complaints were valid.
He assured that the mine management is actively addressing the issues and reaffirmed that previously agreed development plans would continue alongside mining operations.
“All commitments were formally documented and discussed with local leaders. These include financial contributions for development projects, support for local farmers, and other community initiatives. We remain committed to honoring these obligations,” Mwangonde said.
Community representative Mungasulwa Mwambande emphasized that residents will maintain vigilant oversight of the mine’s activities to ensure that promised developments are implemented.
The situation underscores the delicate balance between industrial development and community welfare.
As mining operations continue in Karonga, stakeholders stress the importance of accountability, transparency, and collaboration to ensure that local residents reap tangible benefits from natural resource projects.
The ADC has called for urgent engagement between the Coal and Mining Group and the community to expedite the fulfillment of commitments and mitigate ongoing disruptions.
