After more than a decade of delays, the Mombera University project in Mzimba District is finally entering a decisive phase.Government officials have set a firm deadline to transition from planning to construction.
Second Vice President Enock Chihana has directed contractors to submit a modern architectural design by 20 January, with construction scheduled to begin immediately thereafter.
Addressing investors, traditional leaders, and stakeholders, Chihana emphasized that the university represents a strategic national investment.
He highlighted its potential to enhance education, skills development, and economic growth in the Northern Region, stressing that the January deadline is non-negotiable.
The first student intake is targeted for 2027, contingent on meeting key milestones.
Education Minister Bright Msaka echoed Chihana’s sentiments, describing the university as a long-standing national vision now approaching realization.
The project will be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model to ensure efficient construction and financial sustainability.
Academically, Mombera University will focus on animal science, veterinary medicine, and mining, emphasizing practical, industry-oriented training. Private partners, including NICO Group, are engaged in ongoing PPP discussions.
Traditional leader Inkosi Ya Makosi M’mbelwa V noted that the engagement has renewed local hope, recalling past political delays. With the January deadline approaching, communities are now anticipating tangible progress.
