Malawi’s Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, Joseph Mwanamvekha, has embarked on a mission to strengthen the country’s economic partnerships, securing crucial support from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the process.

Mwanamvekha’s meeting with UAE Minister of State Sheikh Shakhboot Bin Nahyan Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi on Saturday marked a significant step in bolstering bilateral relations between the two nations.

The discussion centered on key areas where Malawi seeks UAE assistance, including fuel supply, fertilizer, pharmaceuticals, and notably, the rehabilitation of Bakili Muluzi International Airport.

The UAE Minister assured Mwanamvekha of support through the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, with a focus on upgrading the airport.

This commitment underscores the UAE’s interest in enhancing Malawi’s infrastructure, potentially boosting trade and tourism.

Furthermore, Sheikh Shakhboot reaffirmed the UAE government’s commitment to investing in Malawi’s mining sector, signaling new opportunities for economic growth and development in the country.

Mwanamvekha’s visit is not limited to the meeting with the UAE Minister; he is also set to engage with other potential investors, aiming to attract more capital into Malawi.

Accompanying him are key officials, including Reserve Bank of Malawi Governor Dr. Mafuta Mwale and Malawi’s Ambassador to the UAE, Yunus Karim, highlighting the significance of this diplomatic push.

This development comes on the heels of a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Malawi and the UAE, focusing on diplomacy, trade, mining, and education.

The ongoing efforts reflect Malawi’s proactive approach to fostering international partnerships for economic advancement.

As Malawi seeks to diversify its economy and improve infrastructure, the support from the UAE could mark a turning point in achieving these goals, with potential benefits for the nation’s development trajectory.
