A road project in Karonga is bringing more than better transport, with dozens of local residents set to earn wages from the works.
Central Mega Limited, the contractor rehabilitating the Kangindwa-Ngana feeder road, will recruit 60 percent of its workforce from communities around the project area.
The commitment means residents who have struggled with the condition of the road will also have a chance to put money into their pockets while the road is being fixed.
The company’s contractor, Elvin Phiri, made the announcement on Tuesday at Kangindwa in the area of Senior Chief Mwakaboko during a handover ceremony where Karonga District Council formally introduced the contractor to the community.
Phiri said hiring locally will ensure that people living near the project benefit directly from the rehabilitation.
“This project should not only leave the community with a better road. People here should also benefit from the jobs created by the works,” Phiri said.
He said the rehabilitation is expected to take 120 days, giving residents a relatively short wait before the road begins to improve.
The Kangindwa-Ngana feeder road is expected to make movement easier for communities and improve access to markets, schools, health facilities and other services.
However, for households the immediate benefit could come in the form of wages from the construction work.
