Ekhaya FC have officially announced the signing of Christopher Kumwembe from Mighty Wanderers on a long-term deal that will keep the experienced striker at the club until the 2028 season.
The move brings a proven top-flight goalscorer to the Cowboys, with Kumwembe having scored 53 goals in eight seasons in Malawi’s Super League. His record includes nine Malawi national team appearances and two international goals.
The transfer comes after an unexpected turn in the striker’s plans. Kumwembe returned to Malawi in June from Zambia intending to rejoin Wanderers, his parent club, and was recently included in the Nomads’ plans for the second round of the season.
He subsequently trained with Wanderers on Wednesday and Thursday but, according to reports, remained unhappy with the situation. His request for a loan move was reportedly rejected before Ekhaya entered the picture.
Ekhaya have now secured his services after reportedly paying Wanderers K15 million in transfer fees, with Kumwembe’s contract at the Blantyre-based club having been due to run until December.
The striker is also reported to have agreed a lucrative package that makes him Ekhaya’s highest-paid player, adding another significant dimension to a transfer that could reshape the Cowboys’ attack.
Ekhaya have struggled for goals in the FDH Bank Premiership this season, scoring 15 times in their opening 15 matches. The arrival of a striker with 53 Super League goals therefore comes at a crucial stage of their campaign.
Kumwembe will now be expected to provide the finishing touch to an Ekhaya side that has shown structure and control but has lacked the same consistency in front of goal.
