Ngwenyama Inkosi ya Makosi Gomani V has challenged Ngoni communities to strengthen the ties that bind them as thousands gathered in Ntcheu for the 2026 Umhlangano wa Maseko Ngoni Cultural Ceremony.
The gathering brought together traditional leaders and Ngoni communities from Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique and South Africa, turning the annual ceremony into a major celebration of shared heritage.
Gomani V challenged the communities to remain united, promote peace and protect traditions passed down through generations.
He also stressed the importance of keeping younger generations connected to Ngoni history and cultural practices.
The gathering attracted senior traditional leaders, including Inkosi M’mbelwa V of Mzimba, Zintambila from Mozambique and Inkosi Luseko from South Africa.
Their presence highlighted the cultural links connecting Ngoni communities despite the national borders separating them.
The ceremony also attracted Vice President Dr Jane Mayemu Ansah and United Democratic Front leader Atupele Muluzi, who attended with his wife.
Traditional authorities, government representatives, cultural groups and members of the public also joined the celebrations.
Traditional music and dance provided some of the biggest highlights, with Gomani V joining fellow traditional leaders and performers in the Ngoni war dance.
The performance featured traditional shields and knobkerries associated with Ngoni history and warrior traditions.
For younger participants, the performances provided an opportunity to experience cultural practices handed down through generations.
The ceremony centred on unity, peace, cultural preservation and stronger regional connections among Ngoni communities.
With Ngoni communities spread across several Southern African countries, the gathering demonstrated how shared heritage can continue to bring people together despite modern borders.
