Her Liberty Organization says equipping rural women with vocational skills can help break economic dependence and enable them to generate income for themselves and their families.
Her Liberty Head of Programs Charity Bita Msachi said practical skills can give women a pathway to financial independence and improved livelihoods.
Msachi said the organisation’s research shows that many women in rural areas remain economically inactive because they lack vocational skills.
She spoke at Mussa Village, GVH Mindano, under Senior Chief Mwambo in Zomba, during the presentation of certificates to 30 women who completed tailoring training under Her Liberty’s Women Economic Empowerment project.
The training was supported by Hilden Charity Trust under the theme, “Empowering Women with Skills and Business Opportunities for Sustainable Livelihood.”
Msachi said Her Liberty wants the beneficiaries to use the skills to start businesses, earn income and better support their families.
“We want to see these women making their own income by starting businesses and improving the economic wellbeing of their families,” she said.
She urged the women to have a clear vision and avoid remaining idle after completing the training.
Speaking as guest of honour, Patricia Mulanje, who represented the Area Development Committee Chairperson for Senior Chief Mwambo, urged the women to work hard and contribute to Malawi’s Vision 2063.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Chisomo Njolomole thanked Her Liberty for the training, saying it would help improve their families’ economic wellbeing.
The women have appealed to organisations and well-wishers for sewing machines and materials such as fabric to enable them to put their skills into practice.
